Injustice

The novel explores issues of racism and sexism to highlight systems of injustice that might go otherwise unnoticed. Sloane and the other Chosen Ones fight and win against the Dark One, but that does not mean they are left in a perfect world. In fact, their victory is met with hatred from a group of vocal protestors who camp out at Drain Sites and demand that the Dark One be brought back because "They thought Matt—the rest of them too, but mostly Matt—was the wrong that needed to be righted, the real evil that the Dark One would eradicate, ushering in some kind of white supremacist utopia” (56). Sloane is infuriated by the way in which people think: “Sometimes Sloane wondered if the world had been worth saving” (57).
