1-5 Summary

The book begins telling the reader not to bother reading the book. He recalls a tale about a young boy with an eccentric mother who in between spells in jail takes him from motel room to motel room. This is not the ideal upbringing, but the narrator wonders why the boy puts up with her antics and suggests it is because he is a pathetic loser. Towards the end of the first chapter, the reader guesses the kid is the narrator. He tells the reader the story is not about anyone that is brave or kind, but the story of an addict.
