Summary

Chapter 1 consists of the social impact statement prepared by Corinna for Kitty. In the statement, Corinna gave Kitty suggestions on her appearance, wardrobe, jewelry, lifestyle, what automobiles she drove, where she ate, where she traveled, where she attended church, and what she talked about in public. Corinna gave Kitty a reading list of books she believed would help broaden her horizons as well as the suggestion that she go on a hiatus from social appearances. Corinna also told Kitty that people needed to see her with Bernard and her daughter in public to quell the rumors that were circulating about him.
