Summary

In Chapter 10, Rowan's mother says someone has discovered her existence. Rowan suddenly realizes she has put her family in danger, a fact she had known only in the abstract until that moment. She fights the thought that Lark might have turned her in. Rowan says she is alright and will return before long, but her mother says she can never see her family again. Rowan had held to the idea that her foster family would be kind and helpful, but now faces the reality that they are only doing this for the money. In rare cases, a legitimate child dies and the family hides the fact for a time, clearing the way for a new child to take the dead child's place. Rowan's mother says their separation must be permanent, but Rowan silently disagrees.
