Chapter Five Summary

As this chapter opens, Casey is rifling through her cigar box of old postcards from Barney. They all say pretty much the same thing: My luck's still slow, hope you're not down. She also keeps a cigar box of the letters she's sent to Barney that have been returned by the post office. She's planning on giving them all to him when they're back together, whenever that may be. To cheer Casey up, Paw-Paw takes her to the movies. Casey thinks she should save the money to have the clasp on the owl necklace fixed, but Paw-Paw thinks there are more important things in life, and puts the owl necklace in the jewelry box. When they return from the movie theatre, Casey hears someone inside their apartment, a burglar. The two aren't concerned about the money, but Paw-Paw suddenly remembers the...
