Section III, 169 - 197 Summary

As the spring weather finally gets warmer, Lester spends time just observing nature. He also spends a lot of time in his new cave, staring at his corpses and dreaming about his childhood. As a boy he used to walk the mountainside and watch the leaves. He thinks to himself how beautiful everything is and often breaks down and cries.

Lester continues to steal food from Greer. One day, he is hiding in the bushes. He loads his gun and fires at Greer while he is shoveling. The bullet hits the shovel. Lester curses and begins to load the gun, as Greer runs away. Lester shoots again, and gets Greer in the chest, but Greer keeps hobbling toward the house. Greer pulls out a gun and shoots Lester in the arm......
