The next day, Lester goes to see his old friend the dumpkeeper. All the dumpkeeper's daughters have left but one. She is still in the house looking after her baby. Lester talks to the dumpkeeper for a while. He asked him about the fire that burned down Lester's house. Lester says that he does not know what started it.

Lester then goes back to visit his friend's house (where he brought the baby a playpretty). He decides to leave his rifle outside. Through the screen door, he can see the daughter reading magazines while the baby plays on the floor. He rings the doorbell and the daughter answers the door.
