Charlotta, Yasha and Dunyasha are talking in a field and it's nearing sundown. Yepikhodov is nearby playing a guitar. Charlotta is bemoaning the fact that she has had a miserable childhood, and Yasha wants to leave and go abroad. Yepikhodov is brooding that he doesn't know whether to live or die so he carries a revolver with him at all times. Yepikhodov (who has already proposed to Dunyasha and is singing of his unrequited love for her) asks to speak with Dunyasha alone. She suggests he go inside to get her cape, and when he does so, she is left alone with Yasha. Yasha kisses her and she declares her love for him. The masters arrive and Yasha sends her away, as he doesn't want the others to know he has taken up dating her. (read more)
