Summary

The best friend hires a nanny because she is overwhelmed by working and taking care of the baby. She worries that her husband will have an affair, but he seems too engrossed in his work. Meanwhile, the narrator gets a raise for tutoring. She remembers her father's draconian math lessons turning into lessons on finance as she got older; he urges her to "think hard about the children that you currently do not have because if they're anything like you, they'll want things that you do not have" (153). The narrator gets angry after watching a Chinese American chef receive applause from the cooking show judges after telling the story of rebelling from her parents: "Why encourage this of us, to constantly rebel, without understanding why some of us do not?" (155)
