Oliver Wood, the Gryffindor Quidditch captain, rudely wakes Harry at the weekend. It is essential to begin training as soon as possible, since Gryffindor lost the Quidditch Cup the previous year, their worst defeat in three centuries. Harry was in hospital at the time, recovering from his encounter with Voldemort. He feels responsible for the defeat and is determined to make up for it, this year. As he makes his way to Quidditch practice, Colin, who worships Harry and wants to know everything about Quidditch and flying a broomstick, pesters him.
