Summary

The prologue of Chain of Gold introduces ten-year-old Lucie Herondale, daughter of famous Shadowhunters Will and Tessa Herondale, as she escapes from her bedroom at Herondale Manor in 1897 to play in the woods nearby. She becomes lost, falling into a soil pit from which she is rescued by a mysterious older boy who walks her back to her home and refuses to tell her his name.

Chapter 1: “Better Angels” opens six years later. James Herondale, Lucie’s older brother, is fighting a demon in London with his three friends: Matthew Fairchild, his parabatai, which is a kind of ‘blood brother’; Thomas Lightwood, extremely tall and muscular; and Christopher Lightwood, with thick glasses and a passion for science.
