Summary

In Chapter 5, the narration provides further exposition on Celine’s past. Specifically, the narration reveals that Celine became pregnant at age 15. She visited the doctor at her boarding school, and he promised not to tell anyone about her pregnancy. Celine then informed her mother—Barbara “Baboo” Watkins—and the school headmistress. After some persuading from Baboo, the headmistress agreed that Celine could return to school after giving birth to the baby. Years later, Baboo accidentally told some of this story to Hank, who then marveled at the possibility that he may have a half sibling in the world somewhere. After Celine and Pete arrive in Denver, Hank broaches the subject of his possible half sibling, but Celine dodges his questions.
