Birdie imagines that she is doing research on white people for a report back at the Nkrumah School. Nicholas visits Birdie in the barn, where she is currying the Marshes' horse, Mr. Pleasure. He drills Birdie on the history and death of her father, the deceased David Goldman. Nicholas says his father believes Sandy and Birdie are running from something, but Birdie denies it.
Birdie begins spending more time with the Marshes. She develops a friendship with fifteen-year-old Nicholas because neither of them really fit into the town. Birdie slips up and tells Mr. and Mrs. Marsh that her grandfather Goldman was a high school history teacher, when Sandy has told them he was a businessman. Birdie is afraid that she has endangered her mother, but she is also reluctant.....
