Chapter 5 Disintegration of Funk Summary
The entire family goes to dinner at Aku-Aku, a Polynesian restaurant. It seems strange to Birdie for Mum and Papa to be together again, talking politely as if nothing is wrong. Birdie has been here often before, with her father and Cole, celebrating special occasions. Papa says, "These Orientals are making a killing off of the white man's racial fantasy. Niggers need to get in on the action - start opening restaurants with niggerish themes. Bow and scrape, step 'n' fetchit, then laugh all the way to the bank."
Birdie is bored, and Cole tells her a story about a girl named Afrodite who will take them away to the land of Elemeno, which looks like the Lanuki Lounge in the restaurant. Meanwhile, her parents talk. Sandy suggests the entire family flee to Canada, but Deck says he has others to consider now - meaning his girlfriend, Carmen. Sandy clearly...
