Cole and Birdie have always loved to play dress up, putting on costumes out of an old trunk in their room. Later, changing will become a way of life for Birdie. Nkrumah is the first time she has to change for real, to erase the person she was before. With her new braids, Cole has started wearing lipstick and become one of the more popular girls at school. Birdie knows she has to make more of an effort to blend in, or she will be left behind. She starts wearing her hair in a thick braid and gets her ears pierced. It works. Ali Parkman develops a crush on Birdie, and Maria invites her to be one of the Brown Sugars, a group of girls with boyfriends.
