Present: Elaine walks to downtown Toronto's shopping centers and sees mod dressed girls and boys, each sex looking like the other. She feels outdone, but asks herself what they are trying to do. She thinks of herself and Cordelia at that age with the adults probably thinking the same about them. Elaine goes to Simpson's Department Store only it is different from what she remembers. The place is overwhelming and she feels lost. The plaid children's clothes remind her of the children's clothes in her day, but she attaches it to a memory of birthday parties and deceitful little girls who remind her of Lady Macbeth. When Cordelia used to bully her, Elaine used to secretly pick her feet and fingers until they bled. The pain helped her cope.
