Randall Patrick McMurphy was sent to an insane asylum as part of a plea bargain arrangement, and must fight to retain his sanity and sense of himself when he is confronted with the brutal authoritarian figure of Big Nurse, who runs the ward.
Slaughterhouse-Five (1969) by Kurt Vonnegut is another semi-autobiographical, satirical novel that uses a nonlinear structure to make its points about the horror and absurdity of war. The main action is set during the Allied bombing of Dresden, Germany, in World War II, and the main character, Billy Pilgrim, like Yossonan, is a bombardier.
