Chapter 3: Misty Morning Summary and Analysis
On February 6, 1945, nineteen-year-old Cedella Marley gave birth to her first child — Robert Nesta. Right away, Cedella's father Omeriah is convinced that an evil spirit is trying to do bad things to him since he nearly dies when he is only four months old. The Malcolms were one of the most prosperous citizens in the area and Omeriah is the most respected citizen in Nine Miles.
When Cedella, frequently called Ciddy, first sees Captain Norval Marley, he is riding a horse with her relative on the back. She quickly falls in love with him and believes him when he talks to her about marriage. However, when she becomes pregnant, Captain Marley only marries her to save Bob from being a bastard child and promptly tells her that he is leaving Nine Miles never to return.
