Part 3, Chapter 11, Alpha Decay Summary

Tuesday rolls around. It is the day of Mikey's funeral. Mitch, Sarah, Travis, Ms. Cummings, and many others attend. Kate notices in the cemetery that a red cardinal lands on her mother's tombstone. She attributes it to a quest for food or for a mate, rather than as a sign from God or her mother.

As Kate and Toby clean up later that night, Toby asks about their mother's funeral since he had been too young to remember. Teri goes down to her house in Bert, and Kate follows to find Teri smashing at the renovated kitchen with a sledgehammer. Teri confesses to Kate that she dressed Mikey for the funeral. Kate tries to help Teri calm down, but Teri is bent on destruction. She gives Kate her keys, and then as Kate goes to drive away...
