Part 1, Chapter 1, Elemental Summary

Kate Malone says she has two sides. One side is the side everyone sees: a good girl, the daughter of Reverend Jack Malone, a science and math geek, and who has great things ahead of her. But then there is the dark side to Kate that no one sees where she is overconfident, lets her boyfriend touch her all over, and is rebellious. She runs at night so no one can see her run.

She considers herself something of a robot: helping with chores, especially laundry. She reflects on how good Kate finds helping around the house soothing, while bad Kate questions what her brother and father will do when she leaves for college.
