Cross believes that Pierce intends to kill the doctor with whom Isabella was having an affair, Dr. Martin Straw. Cross, Sampson, and the FBI stake out Straw's house, but Pierce fails to show up. Cross believes that Pierce has spotted the police. Suddenly Sampson spots Pierce's car. Cross and Sampson give chase. Cross tries to get Pierce to pull over, even has a chance to kill him should he have chosen, however Pierce manages to elude them.

Cross figures out what Pierce will do next. Cross and Sampson go to Pierce's apartment in Cambridge. Police are already in Pierce's building. Someone called the police and said a man was attempting suicide. When Cross arrives at Pierce's apartment, he goes...
