Pauline Moreau

Pauline Moreau can arguably be the main protagonist of the novel, after all, all the major events had either to do with her directly or was in referenced to where she was in the story. She is the young woman that is seduced by her boss and becomes pregnant. In many ways, she is the heroine of the story as well. She represents a struggling storyline that finally stumbles upon the right benefactress to keep her out of her trouble. And though she meets a gruesome ending, she is the character the propels the narrative forward and thus giving the reader a clue into the hard life of a woman during this time period.
