Summary

Chapter eight begins by returning to Pauline in 1963 during her time working for the gentlemen’s club. She had just come from the hospital with Sonia to visit Mrs. Clayborne who had fallen ill. But when she went to her room, the bed was made, and all her things were gone and the room was vacant. Mrs. Clayborne had died. Pauline, while devastated that a dear friend of hers had passed, tried to hide her emotions for Sonia’s sake. Also, she was now concerned how she was going to survive. Because without someone to watch Sonia while she was at work, she could not go back to work. She had already called in sick all week and knew she was on thin ice.
