Summary

Twenty-four years after Pauline started working for the P.A. in 1988, a fire consumed the aluminum plant in Visby, St. Lawrence County in upstate New York. The narrator explained that something went wrong in the foundry, and the fire proceeded to spread, destroying the entirety of the plant. Our narrator informed us of this future event to introduce two characters that we do not know the whereabouts of yet at the time of the fire. These characters were Kay and Robert Whittaker Jr.

The narration is written in third person as it detailed the lives of Robert Whittaker Jr. and his wife Kay. Robert, commonly referred to as Bob has worked since 1957 at the aluminum company, Alumacore, whose headquarters was in Albany, New York. He, later on, successfully moves up in the company and became a managing director at the Visby plant.
