Hurricane Leo is a symbol of change and destruction. It was a common belief on Camino Island that the island was immune to bad storms because it had been so long since one had hit there. Hurricane Leo changes this common belief when it hits the island and causes a good deal of damage and destruction. Leo symbolizes a change in Bruce’s life when his writer friend Nelson is murdered during the storm. Bruce is thrust into investigating Nelson’s murder and trying to get justice for his friend.
