Summary

Elio returned home and wrote a note to Oliver saying: “Can’t stand the silence. I need to speak to you" (116). He pushed the note under Oliver’s door. At breakfast the next morning, Oliver joined them. When Elio returned to his room, his note had been returned with an addition that said: “Grow up. I’ll see you at midnight” (118). Elio analyzed the significance of the note and tried to decide how he would behave the next time he saw Oliver.

Elio called Marzia and she came over and they played tennis. Afterwards, they went to Elio’s bedroom and had sex. Marzia left to go to the movies with friends and Elio told her he wanted to stay home to practice the piano. That night at dinner, the family was joined by a gay couple of male academics.
