Chapter 19, Unexpected Heroes Summary

It is now summer, and Caddie, Tom and Warren head to the Chimney Bluffs to collect berries for Harriet's pies and jellies. There Tom makes an exciting discovery. He sees a bleached skeleton of a rattlesnake that is at least four feet long. He exclaims that they can display it like they did the scalp belt and wonders if Katie will like it. He scoops the vertebrae into his bucket, while Warren shakes the skeletal rattle. Strangely, when Warren stops shaking the rattle, it continues rattling. The children turn and see a live rattler coiled on the ground behind them. They grab their buckets and run home.

Harriet scolds the children for wandering so far from home, and says that maybe they need more work around the farm. They are assigned churning,.....
