Chapter 9, The Rose is Red Summary

Caddie recovers from her cold in time to return to school for Valentine's Day. Staying at home while her siblings attend school has been tiresome, so Caddie is glad to return to school. On Valentine's Day, most children exchange comics, but a few give fancier valentines to their "sweethearts."

Tom has been quiet in the days before Valentine's Day. He tells Caddie she should spend her silver dollar on valentines at the Dunnville store. Caddie thinks that is a waste of her silver dollar, but she does take six pennies she has saved to the store. As she enters the store, she sees Tom slip in the back door.

Caddie buys six comics for a penny each and then spots the most beautiful valentine she has ever seen in the display......
