Summary

In Chapter 18, Phephelaphi realizes that Fambutha knows that she was once expecting a child and that something has happened to that pregnancy. She dares not ask him more about what he knows. Then one day, Phephelaphi senses that Fambutha has slept with another woman. She does not know it is.

In Chapter 19, Phephelaphi learns that Deliwe knows things about Fambutha that she does not, including what happened to Fambutha’s father. Phephelaphi feels betrayed. She knows that Fambutha has slept with Deliwe when she learns that Deliwe also knows about a “cream scar shaped like a mountain on Fambutha’s skin” (118). Phephelaphi returns home and confronts Fambutha. In a long speech, Fambutha tells Phephelaphi about Zandile’s violent history.
