Summary

In Chapter 5, Zandile is outside, in nature. Zandile is trying to attract male attention. Zandile spends the first part of the evening with “her legs around the body of a white man” (33) and in the morning “wakes in the arms of black men whom she truly loves” (33). Zandile observes the bodies of the men that she sleeps with, and occasionally helps to dress and heal the men’s fresher wounds. Zandile laughs, remembering how Getrude would bring her bad with her to all her meetings with clients.

At the beginning of Chapter 6, a man dies in the middle of a quarrel. His wife takes his body away in a wheelbarrow. The narrator describes the stores in town, and narrates the story of the Red Seal Roller Meal. The shop owner of Baloos Stores makes the people scramble and fight for the meal, which...
