Pune

Pune is the city in India where the majority of the novel takes place. Like her mother, Antara was born and raised in Pune. It is not until she meets and gets engaged to Dilip, that Antara becomes critical of her hometown. Dilip's family's disgust for the city makes Antara feel guilty, as if she should be able to control the environment herself. Two years into their marriage, Dilip also grows tired of Pune. He hates its incessant noise and odors, demanding his home bring him back to a state of sensory neutrality. His constant suggestions to relocate to America, or elsewhere in India, bother Antara. Though she no longer loves Pune, it is her home.
