Summary

The chapter opens on Louis wishing his phone would ring and then remembering he left it at home. He is nearly crying, upset at being trapped with Joe in the motel room Joe brought them to with no hope of escaping Joe.

Louis was picked up with no warning and no explanation. He is now certain that Joe has gone crazy. Louis does not believe that the money Joe is chasing exists. Louis also has come to the realization that Mr. Chet, the man behind the murders years ago, is not the reason Joe has been obsessed with Broken River now. That means that Louis is all alone with Joe and he is afraid.

Louis manages to fall asleep despite the pain of Joe’s punch. He awakes the next morning with a pounding headache. Joe then takes him to stake out the Denny...
