Summary

The chapter picks up where the last left off, switching perspectives to Sam. She is still standing in the snow on the porch outside her uncle’s trailer home. Although she loves her uncle, she is not eager to return inside to face another lonely night. She has moved in with him despite her guilt at abandoning her mentally ill mother.

Her uncle has told her that she should not feel bad about leaving her mother, and reveals that Daniel, Sam’s brother, was arrested because their mother reported his illegal activities to the police. Her thoughts turn to her brother. He thrived in prison and appears to not regret the behaviors that led to his incarceration.

Sam was late to pick him up when he was released. Her uncle’s car would not start when she left to get him. A neighbor helps...
