Sunday 1 January: At the beginning of each journal entry, Bridget lists her vital statistics such as weight (129 lbs.), alcohol consumption (14 units), cigarette consumption (22) and calorie consumption (5424). Bridget lists all the food she ate during the day. The calorie count is 5424, so the list is long and includes cheese potatoes, Bloody Marys, more cheese, bread, box of candy and turkey curry and dessert at her parents' best friends' home.

Her mother talked her into attending the annual New Year's Day Turkey Curry Buffet months before even mentioning that Mr. & Mrs. Darcy were bringing their recently-divorced son, Mark. Now it was New Year's Day and Bridget's hangover left her sluggish and really in no mood to go to the Buffet. She felt obligated and started off late.
