Charles' divorce and Bridey's marriage are imminent and the family is in transition moving households to accommodate the new arrangements. Suddenly the family receives word that Lord Marchmain will be returning to Brideshead given the increasing distress in Europe. It has been twenty-five years since Lord Marchmain has left Brideshead.
