Chapters 27 and 28 Summary

In Chapter 27, Sasha spots the principal coming down the hall. He tells him that Miss Petrovna is not guilty and neither is Borka. He only wanted to get arrested so he could see his parents. The principal tells Sasha that Borka's parents had been executed. Ivanych pulls Sasha downstairs to the basement.

In Chapter 28, Ivanych locks Sasha in the basement. He is alone in the darkness. He holds onto the wall and walks slowly along. He bumps into something. He feels around on the object and realizes that it's the statue of Stalin with the missing nose. There is a light yellowish light which allows him to see other discarded items including student artwork and class photographs. A voice speaks out from the shadows: "Out of sight, out of mind.
