In Chapter 1: Bedbug Blues, one morning Susannah Cahalan woke to find what she thought were two bedbug bites on her arm. She had been having dreams about bedbugs which had apparently infested New York City. She called in an exterminator who told her that her studio apartment was clear of the pests.
