In chapter 1 of part 4, Cory learns his father has lost his job. Cory goes to Saxon's Lake where his father is sitting alone, drinking grape juice, and thinking about his life. Tom has reached the end of his rope, no longer sure he can continue to cope with his dreams and reality. Cory thinks of telling him his suspicions about Dr. Lezander, but thinks this is a bad time.
