In chapter 1 of part 2, it is the last day of school. The teacher, Mrs. Neville, asks Cory to consider entering the Arts Council's writing contest that summer. Cory promises to think about it. Once out of the school, Cory joins up with his friends, Davy Ray, Johnny, and Ben. They go up into the woods and pretend to fly over the treetops with their dogs.
