Chapter 14 Summary

Carlos the Jackal has his "old men" in place on Tranquility Island, but Pierre Fontaigne discovers two things that lead him to default. One, the nurse there attending his wife is prepared to kill them both after Marie and the children are dead, but more importantly, Pierre has a conscientious objection to murdering innocent children. Johnny St. Jacques is relieved to find that Marie and the children were safely in another villa when the attack came. Johnny then discovers that Fontaigne, the Frenchman, considered that by plotting to kill him the Jackal had broken their contract; and his wife, understanding what was going on, had committed suicide. Fontaigne had then fired shots, broken into the empty villa and written the words about Jason on the wall.
