Summary

The story “Travis, B.” opens in rural Montana. The protagonist, Chet Moran, is 22 years old and has lived in rural Montana since his childhood. Logan contracted polio as a child, despite such a thing being rare in modern times. He survived, but due to the illness and a horse-riding accident years later, Chet developed a limp. Chet moved out of his parents’ house at age 20 and now works on a ranch in the small town of Glendive, Montana. His social life is generally lonely and isolated. One evening, Chet wanders into the local school, where an adult education class on school law is being held. The teacher is a young lawyer named Beth Travis.
