Summary

Chapter 10 “The Kaumatua and the Broken Man” Joe is released from prison and he gets off of a bus in the middle of nowhere. When he gets to a ravine, he tries to jump it, but falls in instead and breaks his arm. Eventually a mystic man finds Joe and bandages him before inviting Joe to come home with him. Joe does and he learns that the man is named Tiaki Mira. After listening to Joe talk in his sleep, Tiaki learns that Joe was having a nightmare about his late wife. Tiaki educates Joe on the Maori concept of dreams, especially of the afterlife and says it is an omen that his wife’s final wishes for Joe have gone unfulfilled.
