In chapter one, Smiley and Fone are making sandwiches when Smiley announces he has given the baby rat creature the name Bartleby. Fone is against naming the creature since they are going to turn it loose, but Smiley pays Fone no attention. While they are stopped for lunch, they are found by two grown rat creatures. They are able to fight the rat creatures off only to find that a giant cat named Roque Ja has found them.
