The next morning Torey confronts Alex about not showing up to band practice. Alex initially attempts to lie to Torey by saying he had a history paper to do. Later Torey finds out that Alex was at home with Renee. Then Alex tells Torey about another time when he hit Creed. Alex had been about twelve, riding his bike when Creed ran toward him to show him a treasure map he had made. Alex was so annoyed by Creed's behavior and choice of words that he took the map and tried to tear it, but Creed had had it laminated. Alex threw the map down and hit Creed.
