Chapter 4 Summary

At school the next day, Torey's chemistry teacher is absent, so he is allowed to go to lunch early. On his way to the cafeteria, Torey runs into a friend, Ali McDermott. Ali and Torey have known each other since they were small, but Ali has been drifting from Torey and his friends since her parents separated last year. Torey wants to talk to Ali about Chris Creed because she seems to be the only person in school who does not want to joke about it and because she lives across the street from the Creeds. Torey slips away from his friends before his girlfriend can see him.

Ali takes Torey out a side door where the fire alarm has been disabled. Ali immediately lights up a cigarette, and Torey thinks of how different.....
