Carol Plum-Ucci was born in 1957 and grew up on the small island of Brigantine, just north of Atlantic City. She came from generations of sea captains, and she spent much of her youth by the sea and at the beach. In addition to working as a sea captain, Plum-Ucci's father was a funeral director. Living above the morgue fed the author's imagination and fostered in her an interest in mysteries and ghost stories.
Plum-Ucci believes in the power of persistence, and she has certainly been persistent in her writing. She says she has wanted to write since she authored her first poem in third grade, and she has never wavered from that pursuit.
