Summary

In Chapter 9, “I Liked the Way You Stood Up for Us” (172), Chino arrived home to find Blanca in the apartment with her pastor. She was telling the pastor about Chino's association with Willie Bodega when there was a knock at the door. Chino opened it to two police officers, Detectives DeJesus and Ortiz, who asked him to come to the station. Blanca left to go to her mother's. At the police station, Detective DeJesus, who was Cuban, made disparaging remarks to Chino about Puerto Ricans. Chino responded with a comment about how Cuban immigrants had been kicked out of their home country by Fidel Castro. The police captain asked Chino about Willie Bodega and Alberto Salazar.
