Pecola's family had lived in an apartment inside an abandoned building in Lorain, Ohio. It had housed many things before them; a pizza parlor, a bakery, and a gypsy store. But some realtor had installed temporary walls inside the building and it became their home. There were two rooms, a living room and a bedroom. The kitchen was a separate room at the back of the building. There was no bathroom in their apartment, there was just a toilet.
