Luther does not have to go to Vietnam because he is an only child but he accepts his orders just to see what the war is about. Luther is a sailor's sailor and regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty. He is assigned to a hospital in Hoi An that treats wounded Viet Cong. Luther is in charge of the pharmacy and dispensing medicine to local Vietnamese villages. Whatever the village chief wants Luther orders from America with no questions asked. Luther does not associate with the other soldiers because he does not want to get close to them and then have them die. Instead he takes the time to get to know the local Vietnamese.
