Rose Hathaway

Rose is the narrating character of the book. Rose is an eighteen-year-old student at St. Vladimir's Academy in Montana. However, Rose has recently dropped out of the school in order to search for her lover, Dimitri in Russia. Rose is a dhampir, half vampire and half human. Rose was training to be a guardian to a Moroi, a living vampire, but by dropping out of school Rose has lost her chance to become promised, to be assigned, to a Moroi to protect.

Rose is looking for Dimitri in Russia because he was a dhampir guardian like her, but during a rescue mission to save some students and personel stolen from St. Vlad's during an attack by Strigoi, Dimitri was attacked and turned into a Strigoi.
